Maduro Declares Top US Diplomat ‘Persona Non Grata,’ Gives Him 48 Hours to Leave

from TeleSUR

President Nicolas Maduro said United States Chargé d’Affaires Todd Robinson and head of political affairs Brian Naranjo have 48 hours to leave Venezuela. Maduro says the decision to expel the pair is aimed at defending Venezuela’s sovereignty and in rejection of Washington’s interventionist policies against the country and its people.

“I have declared him persona non grata, and I announce the exit of the United States Chargé d’Affaires in 48 hours,” Maduro said of Todd Robinson during the official proclamation of his re-election. In March, the opposition requested the U.N. not send observers out of fear it would legitimize an election they called on supporters to boycott. Nevertheless, Venezuela’s election results will be discussed on Monday at a G-20 meeting.

China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi held a meeting with his Venezuelan counterpart Jorge Arreaza after which China declared its everlasting friendship towards Venezuela.

“China’s policy towards Venezuela will not change. China has always upheld the principle of non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries, and believes Venezuela’s government and people have the ability to resolve problems via talks within a legal framework and protect national stability. The international community should take a fair and objective stance and play a constructive role”.
