Youtube Censoring My Latest Video on Gaza: it isn’t violating community guidelines but it is “controversial” according to the ADL I guess

by Scott Creighton (H/T AuntBB)

UPDATE: Here’s a video of “Tommy Robinson” hanging out with some skin-heads of the EDL saying things like “Send the Black C***s Home” referring to immigrants in England. One might think that kind of language would incite violence in that crowd against people of color, right? But apparently the video hasn’t been flagged and hasn’t even been given one of those warnings that my video just received. And that video has been up since 2013. Hmmm. Curious, right?

A couple hours ago I recorded myself reading the article I wrote this morning on the situation in Gaza. I then posted that on Youtube. This is the article:

Under the Cover of “Tommy Robinson” and Roseanne’s Racism, Israel Continues Ethnic Cleansing Operation in Gaza

Go ahead and read the article if you haven’t already. There are no calls for violence toward anyone. It is not promoting violence. It is not celebrating terrorism. It’s just news on what is happening in Gaza and my feelings toward how the complicit media are ignoring it.

I posted the video and took a nap. When I woke up, I checked my Twitter feed to see what was going on in the world and I found this:

This is exactly how it started last time by the way. Took a nap. Woke up. Censorship leading to the removal of my channel. Deja vu.

So I went to my channel and this is what I found on that new video I put up.

When I play the video, this is what I see:

Just the video. Everything else blacked out as if I’m doing something bad just by watching news from Gaza.

The message they gave me, the content creator, reads as follows:

The article linked to above and the video which you can still watch… is not hate speech. No calls for violence. No inciting violence. No promotion of terrorism. It’s simply the truth about the violence being inflicted on the people of Gaza and a reminder of what REALLY HAPPENED since March 30 in terms of exactly who is harming whom.

And that is what Youtube now considers “hate speech”?

This is a screenshot from my content creator page. As you can see, only one “down” vote. I guess that was one important content reviewer huh?

At this time I have not received any community strikes regarding this video.

This is part of what they sent to me in the email:

We believe in the principles of free speech, even when that speech is unpopular or potentially offensive to some viewers. However, YouTube doesn’t allow hate speech or content that promotes or incites violence. In some cases, flagged videos that do not clearly breach the Community Guidelines but whose content is potentially controversial or offensive may remain up, but with some features disabled.

Your video will be shown after a warning message. In addition, certain features such as comments, sharing, thumbs up, and suggested videos have been disabled. Your video is also ineligible for monetization.

According to Youtube’s “commitment to fight terror” page, the ADL and a couple other unnamed NGOs are ‘helping’ them figure out what content is hate speech and which content isn’t.

“Over the past weeks, we have begun working with more than 15 additional expert NGOs and institutions through our Trusted Flagger program, including the Anti-Defamation League, the No Hate Speech Movement, and the Institute for Strategic Dialogue. These organizations bring expert knowledge of complex issues like hate speech, radicalization, and terrorism that will help us better identify content that is being used to radicalize and recruit extremists…

We’ll soon be applying tougher treatment to videos that aren’t illegal but have been flagged by users as potential violations of our policies on hate speech and violent extremism. If we find that these videos don’t violate our policies, but contain controversial religious or supremacist content, they will have some features removed. The videos will remain on YouTube behind an interstitial, won’t be recommended, won’t be monetized, and won’t have key features including comments, suggested videos, and likes”

So. It’s not against their policies. It’s not “hate speech” or calling for violence against anyone (quite the contrary actually). It certainly isn’t promoting terrorism. But my video did contain WHAT AN ADL CENSOR considered to be controversial content in that I have a different opinion about the IDF shooting Palestinian children with sniper rifles and launching rocket attacks against 65 targets inside Gaza.

Maybe they didn’t like the fact that I cited an Israeli publication which gave the details of all those Israeli casualties as being folks who bruised themselves running for a bomb shelter after the IDF ‘accidentally” set off the air-raid siren.

Whatever the case may be… here we go again.

  1. What do we do? Write YouTube? Flag videos that are pro-Israel? You have looked into this more than I have – feeling powerless at the moment.

  2. Yeah, I was wondering as well seeing this on YT:

“In response to user reports, we have disabled some features, such as comments, sharing, and suggested videos, because this video contains content that may be inappropriate or offensive to some audiences.

    Fuck ’em!

  3. This is much bigger than just the ADL, of course. So, yes mentioning anything controversial, particularly anything involving Israel, is now delegated to the trash heap. It’s ludicrous, to put it mildly.

  4. Maybe they’re just confused, as you seem to be getting you “terrorists” mixed up…
