Handshake in Korea Costs MIC Over $10 billion in Less Than a Week

by Scott Creighton

While Trump tries to take credit for the renewed peace effort on the Korean peninsula (1:43 mark in video), reports from Fortune magazine are exposing just how jaded, cynical and dependent on endless war our military industrial complex’s stock market has become. It would appear the “glorious markets” don’t like the prospect of peace breaking out in that region. So much so, the stocks of 5 military contractors lost over $10 billion dollars in value in less than a week at the mere prospect of peace. A while ago I wrote that Lockheed Martin was the big winner in the area as Trump lied about sending an armada to North Korea and all his other blustering about “fire and brimstone” and blowing up the people of the DPRK. Guess I was right about that. But let’s see what peace does to our real masters in D.C.

While stock markets in Asia are breathing a sigh of relief after North and South Korea’s leaders shared a friendly handshake and vowed to work toward wiping away nuclear weapons from the Korean Peninsula Friday, once high-flying defense stocks are taking the hit.

On Friday, while the broader stock market as measured by the S&P 500 index remained largely flat, the S&P Aerospace and Defense Select Industry Index fell roughly 1.3%.

The U.S.’s five largest defense contractors shed about $10.2 billion in value on Friday alone. Lockheed Martin fell 2.5% to a valuation of about $92.1 billion; Northrop Grumman slid 3.4% to $56 billion; General Dynamics shed 3.8% to $60.7 billion; Raytheon dropped 3.6% to $50.8 billion; and finally, Boeing slid a much lesser 1% to $200.2 billion. And what about what I wrote about Trump giving the MIC a HUUUUUGE lift by pretending to be a “mad dog” when it comes to North Korea?

It was a turn in rhetoric. Since the election of President Donald Trump in 2016, the aggressive talk between the U.S. and North Korea had been heating up—pushing investors wary of a potential war into defense stocks. So over the past year, while the S&P 500 has risen roughly 12%, the S&P Aerospace & Defense Select Industry Index has gained 27%. Fortune

All Trump did was make his super wealthy friends in the “swamp” a lot richer with all his false bravado. The North Koreans knew he was lying about that “armada” before the citizens of the U.S. did, which was pretty quick. They also know how many times Lockheed Martin’s missile defense system tests have FAILED in the past two years… AND they know China told Trump to keep his tiny little hands off em.

So, no. Trump didn’t so shit to bring about the renewed peace effort in Korea. That was the leaders of the DPRK and the RoK. Trump is just trying to gloom onto the moment so he can boast about it in front of his fan-boys at some rally somewhere. I wonder if the Trumpster will take credit for the fall-off in Swamp Critter profits or will he blame that one on Assad so he can launch some more rockets at Syrians? I guess he better call his friends in Jaish al Islam and see if they can make another video for him real quick.

Now here is a fascinating aspect to all of this… as this goes on, the Trump apologists and fan-boys are beside themselves patting each other on the back for Trump’s “victory” in Korea. That’s fascinating because just a few months ago all they wanted was too see U.S. missiles blowing up North Korean children, but that is beside the point.

What’s REALLY fascinating is the fact that no matter how obvious it is that this happened IN SPITE OF TRUMP and his warmongers generals, they are so willing to drop their bloodlust for the region and replace it with olive branches and Nobel Prizes for their glorious leader.

Do you want to know why that is?

Because… without THEM there would be no TRUMP. That’s right. They went from wishing death and destruction on the people of Korea to declaring THEIR OWN right to ownership of a Nobel Prize in a matter of a couple weeks.

Like when a heel turns into a face overnight in the WWE by running out and defending the good guy by whacking the bad Russian over the head with a chair. It’s just that fast.

That’s what our understand of geopolitics comes down to these days because we are a nation of folks with 5-minute spans.

So don’t worry Swamp People. Don’t worry MIC shareholders. Trump and his devotees will easily be marched back into a more profitable mindset when it comes to Korea. All you got to do is get the new FACE to betray the HERO in the next show and it’s back to HEEL status for him… and rising stock prices.

  1. Even considering the idea of awarding Trump the Nobel Peace prize show how sick our nation is.

  2. Reblogged this on deinvestiture.

  3. At least the freak show makes for a good, if sick, laugh. Pass some more soda and popcorn, please!
