Turkish warplanes shot down a drone near the Syrian border on Friday in the latest incident in the region’s tense airspace, officials said.
The drone was hit nearly two miles into Turkish airspace, the Reuters news agency reported, citing the Turkish broadcaster NTV said. Turkish officials told Reuters that the origins of the drone were not immediately clear.
The airspace along the Turkish-Syrian border has become the focus of heightened attention since Russia’s military intervention last month into Syria’s civil war to back the embattled government of President Bashar al-Assad.
