Obama Administration Backtracks on Drone Policy – Claims They Can’t Kill Citizens on U.S. Soil

by Scott Creighton

It seems Rand Paul’s little filibuster may have had some effect after all. After a day of serious abuse being leveled  at the Obama administration and other dems for failing to support the Paul filibuster, today U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder sent Rand Paul a short letter which stated:

“It has come to my attention that you have now asked an additional question: ‘Does the president have the authority to use a weaponized drone to kill an American not engaged in combat on American soil? The answer to that question is no.” Eric Holder

Today was filled with all kinds of questions coming out about Rand Paul’s filibuster and the Eric Holder letter which started it all in which he said he thought the president could “under certain circumstances” like another 9/11, use the military drones to take out a U.S. citizen on U.S. soil without any due process of law. Today’s letter is a bit of a turnaround for Mr. Holder. Not much, but a bit.

Only 14 republican senators and 1 democratic senator aided Rand in his 13 hour filibuster yesterday. People were asking “where are the democrats on this issue?” and the Obama administration was starting to get some rather unflattering attention.

The Huffington Post STILL has this on their front page:

When a complicit rag like the Huffington Post goes this far, you know the mood in the “progressive” left is starting to get a bit tense.

John Cusack sent a number of Tweets that garnered some attention as well. He doesn’t really understand Obama’s real history, but the message to the left was crystal clear: he called Obama a regressive corporate warlord.

John Cusack         @johncusack

dems ? Do U have any thoughts on Obama’s transition from a progressive academic humanist 2 a regressive corporate warlord?

Fact is, that is what Obama was born into and in spite of the propaganda surrounding his career prior to being tapped for the presidency by the Clintons, and that is what he remains. No shock there. But the stinging critique of his behavior is ruffling some feathers across the country as his tweet has been picked up by numbers of news sites across the political spectrum.

Of course, this site and many others have been saying that for years now. But who listens to us conspiracy theorists anyway…

John Brennan, the monster and torture hawk, was confirmed a little while ago to be Obama’s next CIA chief. Paul didn’t have the time to filibuster him today I suppose. It’s possible that Rand’s move was simply grandstanding.

I can easily see him using this moment in 2016 when he ends up being Jeb Bush’s vice presidential candidate (and they will “win” it of course… the pattern is “Bush (via Reagan) Bush (via Reagan) Bush, Clinton Clinton, Bush Bush, Clinton (via Obama) Clinton (via Obama), Bush (Jeb 2016) see the pattern?)

  1. Well a tiny little bit of ostensibly good news is nice. ‘Course Obomba is not bound by his own proclamations anyway. Nice to suppose that there is still such a thing as political pressure.

  2. I’d be ok with authorizing drones used against US Citizens in the case of another 9/11. Target Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, George W Bush, Condoleeza Rice, Larry Silverstein, et al. Or in the next case, Barrack Obama, Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton, Eric Holder, et al.

  3. ” not engaged in combat” They’ll have to define this.

    • You know, I only wrote this a couple hours ago and looking back on it, I’m like.. “WTF was I thinking?”

Obama lies about everything. He says one thing one day while doing the exact opposite while he’s saying it. The guy sits around on “terror tuesday” planning to kill people and brags about it. It doesn’t matter what he says and it matters even less what one of his flunkies say. They already kill people in this country, they just can’t boast about it and get poll bumps for it yet, that’s the only thing he really wants. So I don’t know what I was thinking. This is nothing but more bullshit. Same bullshit, different day.

      • I’ve thought about that too. Policy is definitely reactionary. He’s he’s clearly a duplicitous guy with a good smile. We don’t have names yet. But we do know they discussed killig key Occupiers.

      • This “I don’t know what I was thinking” comment of yours is a perfect example why I, and I assume many others, trust your brain, your integrity and your intellectual honesty…. :-))

Every time there is an argument about legitimizing and legalizing an oppressive and unconstitutional move, most of what they are discussing is already in effect.

In any case, it is another hat trick. While they have the whole public and the discussion fixated on “drones”, the real argument is not whether US citizens can be droned, but whether or not they can be killed by the government by whatever means. And the filibuster of the douchebag Rand is nothing but theater and smokescreens serving as a distraction from the real issues, not to mention that it was used as an invisible shield for Holder to avoid scrutiny about fast and furious.

In the meantime, they have shoved into our brains that, in “extraordinary circumstances like pearl harbor or 9/11”, they might consider it. And the whole country is going “Oh yeah, if something like that happens, of course, please drone us all… In layman terms, this is a foot in the door… They seem to have already made the nation accept that the military can be used to police the citizens, in spite of the long standing posse comitatus laws still in effect in the country. National guard is across the world fighting perpetual wars, while the military is joining forces with the police and slowly replacing them to enforce laws back at home. If this is, in effect, not an invasion, I don’t know what is.

  4. I work really hard not to be racist. Unlike most people I accept that Im affected by upbringing and media propaganda and so I have to really reason through my thinking on distinctions between groups. That’s why I hate making this observation. Obama is behaving like a house negro. He sympathizes with the white powerful to the extent that he feels he’s one of them. He’s sold out the common guy, especially the people of color population. In those old movies, what does the slave toiling in the field think about the house negro? Today all these commoners seem to think he’s the hero in DC on their side doing their bidding.

    • he’s behaving like a smart, duplicitous career minded sellout just like the Clintons before him and the Bushs for that matter. All politicians are house negros. That’s what makes them politicians these days. You have to be or you’re kicked to the curb like Cynthia McKinney.

You don’t have to go that far back in cinema history to see the way the house negro is portrayed. Django Unchained is as far back as you need to go. Samuel Jackson did a good job making his character as despicable and treacherous as any in modern history. A veritable Iago.

Renfield is the original house negro. And he wasn’t even black. Read this description. It’s apt I think

      R. M. Renfield, aetat 59. Sanguine temperament, great physical strength, morbidly excitable, periods of gloom, ending in some fixed idea which I cannot make out. I presume that the sanguine temperament itself and the disturbing influence end in a mentally-accomplished finish, a possibly dangerous man, probably dangerous if unselfish. In selfish men, caution is as secure an armour for their foes as for themselves. What I think of on this point is, when self is the fixed point the centripetal force is balanced with the centrifugal. When duty, a cause, etc., is the fixed point, the latter force is paramount, and only accident or a series of accidents can balance it.

These people are indeed selfish but some of them, the true believers like Hillary, Brennan and Cheney, they serve something else… a “greater good” for which they are willing to sacrifice everything. Bush wasn’t like that. That is why they kept him in the dark about 9/11 for as long as they could. Obama may be like them. Seems his wife definitely is. But still they serve. How far they will go only history will tell.

      • The difference between Obama and Clinton is in fact history of race. At least Clinton was actually a little sympathetic to the plight of black America. A man who is not mindful of the history he descends from is less than a duplicitous career minded sellout. Its true that the concept of house negro is portable. In any case it’s a display of character.
Being a leader is absolutely a tricky game but there are some while mindful of it tried to at least demonstrate some propensity for democratic values.

  5. In a recent article about a police officer death in Santa Cruz the newspapers mentioned that the police we going house to house searching residents closets:
Even after Goulet’s death, officers continued a house by house, “closet-by-closet” search of the neighborhood to determine if there were additional suspects. Sheriff Wowak says it is his belief the public is now out of harm’s way. —-http://www.kron4.com/Article.aspx?ArticleID=5512

I found this odd, not because the police were doing this, but because they are now doing it so openly and saying it in the mainstream press.

When Dorner was killed they openly wrote about having drones in the sky looking for him. Were they armed predator drones? If not it’s only a matter of time. Was he a combatant? Of course, anyone they are looking for is.

When Bradley Manning released videos of U.S. army helicopter machine gunning civilians chatting in front of the corner store in a foreign country … he is taken away and tortured.

Whistle blowers of any type are routinely persecuted.

In all countries the government schools teach that their own country and government stand for truth and justice. It doesn’t matter if it is India, China, USA, Britain … all governments stand for lying and corruption.

    We were all lied to.
