USS Liberty Survivor Among 12 U.S. Citizens Abducted by Israel – 11 Have Been Released – What Happened to the 12th?

by Scott Creighton

We are getting closer to understanding what really happened after the Israeli commandos opened fire on the humanitarian aid flotilla some 5 minutes prior to their attempt to board the ships. Israel has begun the process of sending 325 humanitarian aid workers back to their respective home nations, but 186 still remain locked away in the Israeli prison system somewhere, or worse.

Hanin Zoabi, a member of the Israeli parliament, was on board the “Miva Marmara,” the ship that was the scene of the confrontation between activists and Israeli soldiers. The Israeli Navy fired on the ships five minutes before commandos descended from ropes that dangled from helicopters, Zoabi said during a news conference in Nazareth, Israel. She said passengers on board the ship were unarmed.

It was an absolute planned shock and awe aggression,” said Norman Paech, a former German lawmaker, in Berlin. “They came from the helicopters down from the top and started shooting around them.”  CNN

But as the announcement was made this morning and the list of the nationalities of the victims was released by the Israeli Interior Ministry I noticed a funny thing; Israel is claiming they have repatriated 11 U.S. citizens but 12 are reported to have been abducted from the flotilla in the first place. What happened to the 12th U.S. citizen?  Israel released one U.S. citizen yesterday.  Is that person included in Israel’s list of 11 that have been repatriated?

Michael Rivero of What Really Happened has reported that there are unconfirmed reports coming out of Greece that one of the fatalities was a U.S. citizen.  Though this report is still unconfirmed at this time, this new discrepancy begs the question “what happened to the 12th U.S. citizen”?  Were the Greek rumors correct?

But who is the missing U.S. humanitarian aid worker kidnapped by the Israeli government early Monday morning? If they released 11 and 12 are reported to have been on the flotilla, who exactly is missing?  The complete list of all U.S. citizens on the Freedom Flotilla is below.  Each and every one of them is important and these good people, people who felt strongly enough about the situation in Gaza to put their lives on the line, must be brought home and their illegal incarceration must be condemned by the White House and each and every member of congress who wants to be re-elected.

But I must single out one of the twelve only because of his previous Navy career. The U.S.S. Liberty was attacked the ship was in international waters north of the Sinai Peninsula by Israeli jets and torpedo boats over the course of several hours. They were flying their U.S. flag with clear markings of the ships origin. Israel said it was an “accident”. 34 U.S. sailors lost their lives and the survivors were told to remain silent about the event or face possible treason charges.

Former U.S. Navy signalman Joe Meadors from Corpus Christi, TX. was on board the U.S.S. Liberty in 1967 when Israel attacked her and nearly sank her killing 34 American sailors and injuring 173.

Jean Meadors, wife of Joe Meadors, 63, of Corpus Christi, Texas, a Navy veteran also on board a seized ship, said Monday evening that she believed he was safe, “but I’d like to hear that from him.”

She said his exact status, whether under arrest, detention or otherwise, was unclear.  AP

Not only was Joe Meadors on the USS Liberty when it was attacked, but he has been helping to lead a movement to try to get an official investigation into the event for decades. Joe Meadors actually attempted to raise additional flags on the Liberty during the Israeli attack, according to eye witnesses, only to have Israeli pilots shoot them down…

Another reason why Lockwood is so certain that the attack was deliberate is because he watched Joe Meadors hoist three US flags up a pole in an attempt to insure the Israeli pilots knew they were firing on a US ship.

The Israelis claim they didn’t see a US flag, but they shot down two, and Joe raised three of them, since they kept firing on them,” Lockwood explained, “They riddled the third with bullet holes, but it stayed up.” TruthOut

This is what we know so far. More information to follow as soon as it becomes available.

Of all 682 peace activists onboard Freedom Flotilla, about 325 foreign activists were transferred on Wednesday from the Ela detention center in Be’er Sheva to Ben Gurion Airport near Tel Aviv for flights to their homelands, Ha’aretz reported.

However, 186 human rights activists are still in Israeli detention in Be’er Sheva

According to Israeli Interior Ministry the following is the breakdown of number of activists who have been repatriated so far:

Three activists from Australia; 2 from Azerbaijan; 6 from Italy; 12 form Indonesia; 9 from Ireland; 28 from Algeria; 11 from the United States; 2 from Bulgaria; 1 from Bosnia; 4 from Bahrain; 5 from Belgium; 11 form Germany; 1 from South Africa; 2 form the Netherlands; 31 from the United Kingdom; 38 form Greece; 30 from Jordan; 15 form Kuwait; 3 form Lebanon; 3 from Mauritania; 11 from Malaysia; 3 from Egypt; 3 from Macedonia; 7 form Morocco; 3 form Norway; 1 form New Zealand; 3 form Syria; 1 form Serbia; 1 form Oman; 3 from Pakistan; 4 form Czech Republic; 9 from France; 1 form Kosovo; 1 form Canada; 11 form Sweden; 380 form Turkey and 4 activists from Yemen.  Press TV

Five Delegates with US-Based Free Palestine Movement Among those Attacked

Contact: Jonathan Slevin:
Free Palestine Movement Spokesman

El Cerrito, CA — Twelve Americans sailing in the six-ship Freedom Flotilla to Gaza have not been heard from since the early morning hours of Sunday, Gaza time. Within this group is the 5-person delegation of the US-based Free Palestine Movement (FPM). “Given reports coming from the Turkish ship Mavi Marmara which was leading the nonviolent, humanitarian flotilla, we must assume that all U.S. citizens in the international coalition have been abducted.” Jonathan Slevin, spokesman for the Free Palestine Movement, said. The ships were sailing under U.S., Turkish, Greek, Swedish, and Irish flags.

Israeli gunships surrounded the flotilla and fully-armed commandos dropped onto the deck of the Mavi Marmara from hovering helicopters, shooting at unarmed passengers. Israeli sources are now reporting 20 killed and up to 80 wounded. Israeli blackout of all communication currently prevents any confirmation of these numbers, however.

Former Ambassador Edward Peck of Chevy Chase, MD, is among those Americans abducted. Among other things, he served as Deputy Director of the Cabinet Task Force on Terrorism at the Reagan White House and State Department Liaison Officer to the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the Pentagon. He spent 32 years in the Foreign Service, including Chief of Mission in Iraq. His wife, Ann Peck, received this morning text message stating that her husband is well and on his way to New York, but we have not been able to confirm this.

Also forcibly abducted is former U.S. Navy signalman Joe Meadors from Corpus Christi, TX. He is a decorated navy veteran and survivor of the 1967 Israeli attack on the USS Liberty. 34 Americans were killed and 173 were injured in that attack.
“It came as no surprise that Israel behaved in a disproportionate way to this humanitarian mercy mission. The Israeli government has repeatedly flouted international law, denying basic human necessities to Palestinians both in Gaza under siege and in the West Bank in the shadow of the apartheid wall.” said Mr. Slevin.

Other Americans believed to have been kidnapped in the Israeli assault include:

Gene St. Onge

  1. I hope no one thinks that this new information will make any difference to our president and members of congress. What really happened has a list of congresscritters who took money from israeli pacs. Check it out, these people need to be voted out as soon as possible. Do I think that voteing still means anything? I hope so but don’t believe so. After all we are suppose to believe that Americans are so dumb they voted in Mr. Bush twice?

  2. joel715, who is there to vote for? So far they are all the same…. the ones being voted out ad the ones going in.

    ‘congresscritters’…. nice word…. 🙂

  3. Don’t like what’s happening in our country? Then don’t, under any circumstances, ever vote for any Democrat or Republican, for any race in any election ever.

  4. I agree j r. But we should also get rid of those damn electronic voting machines while we are at it. that might help a little as well don’t you think?

  5. Hard to vote when “they” choose who you vote for. America is not free we are lead to believe so by giving us controlled choices that benefit “them” in the long run. Obama, Bush & McCain no matter who you vote for they all lay with the same dogs. So you still end up with nothing but more chaos. It’s a wash my friends. But, hopefully there enough citizens from around the world on that ship that a whole lot of countries say hell no. But, they are being released after time so the Israeli’s can threaten them and their loved ones if they breath a word. So in short Israel wins again even though they are the mafia of nations!

  6. Joe Meadors is a personal hero of mine, as is the entire USS Liberty crew. The reality of Israeli abuse of international law and callous disregard for the rights and safety of others has not changed over all these years because there were no repercussions in any meaningful way from their dastardly attack on the Liberty in June of ’67. I am glad Joe was there to witness what he already knew for everyone else, and I am deeply saddened and angered over the senseless deaths and injuries of the other peace activists on the flotilla.

  7. this is literally sickening. i believe we need to accomplish a massive general strike until all survivors are returned safely home and then until all those in the govt loyal to israel and guilty of treason to the usa are removed from office. without pensions. and it does appear that the US government will stick staunchly with the israeli lies. again. copied below is an email i received from lynn woolsey, 6th district, california, in response to my email of horror and distress at the murders of humanitarian workers. woolsey never misses a chance to send israel money. she was one of the yea-sayers on the last vote to send $205 million. i asked her how she felt about what israel does with the money and weapons she votes to send to them. i want to share her response. i know others get similar responses from their reps but i want as many people as possible to see it in black and white. i think it would be a good idea to flood the internet with this email evidence of complicity in crimes against humanity and treason rampant in our congress and administration.

    Dear Ms. Nicholson:

Thank you for contacting me with your concerns about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. I appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts with me on this important matter.

Please know that I remain a strong supporter of both Israel’s right to exist as a sovereign nation and its right to defend itself from violent attacks. The devastation and death on both sides are inexcusable and deeply sadden me. Both Palestinians and Israelis must remain committed to reaching a peaceful resolution of the conflicts if they are ever able to attain any lasting security.

With Israelis living in fear of suicide bombings and rocket attacks and Palestinians continuing to live under terrible conditions, the situation between Israel and the Palestinians remains unsustainable. The Palestinian leadership needs to take active steps to eradicate acts of terrorism, and Israel must allow the Palestinian people the resources to work towards peace and stability. It’s my hope that the U.S. will return to its role as an honest broker and make a concerted effort to bring Israelis and Palestinians to the negotiating table in order to end this on-going crisis. Please know that I will keep your thoughts in mind as I continue to work toward a just two-state solution in the Middle East that guarantees Israel’s security and provides self-determination for the Palestinians.

Again, it’s good to hear from you. The people of Marin and Sonoma counties are the most important voices I listen to as I serve in Congress.

    Lynn Woolsey
    Member of Congress

Same kind of shit I get from mine–all three of them, House and Senate, Democrat or Republican–all alike. No matter what I write about, they won’t listen to it, or hear it.

Letters to the Editors of MSM newspapers don’t get published either, or are ‘edited’ just enough to make them sound like they came from a moron.

That massive general strike sounds good to me. Hope the anger builds enough to make it happen.

  13. Rabbi Weiss “We Cry and We Pray for the People of Palestine and Gaza!”

  14. You got that right joel!
There will be no accounting and no real investigation. Or they will sacrifice some low level pawn This was caught on camera; saved most of these peoples; lives otherwise the headlines would have read :
“hamas terrorist supply ships sunk by Israeli mossad “

  15. I agree get rid of the electronic voting machines. Go back to paper ballots, may take longer to count but alot more accurate and less chance of fraud. I also agree you cannot vote for repugs or dems, there is only one party in DC, the war party. Try and find 3rd party or real independents who will stand up for America. Like I said above, a good place to start is list of people(and I use the term loosly) who took israeli money. I am so saddened and disgusted that our president(and I use the term loosly) is backing up israel on this murder on the high seas. Now they are saying the UN has until jun 21 to act on new sanctions on Iran or the US will act unilaterly. Oh boy lets get another war going, we really need to distract the people from the voilcano, the massacre on the high seas and the rest of it. I think a general strike is in order. I wonder if Americans could turn off American idol long enough to participate?

  16. Joel, in answer to your question, unfortunately not. We’ve got a nation full of chickenshit brainwashed idiots.

  17. Good grief, cinderman….
that is not true….. many are too trusting and have been fooled but most are certainly not “chickenshit brainwashed idiots”.

have you bought your condo on the sea yet?
Hope Scott puts up the info on it…. seems the ‘rich’ have plans to escape land and live high on the oceans…. away from the unhappy slaves.

  18. Jan, I beg to disagree. No, I’m not buying a beachfront condo. I’m a mtn man and live at 4000′ and on one of the world’s most active volcanos… mark that two! Just for the record, I’m in the subclass economically. Everyone thinks that we who live in hawaii have this cruise life. It’s the exactly the opposite – the majority of us are very poor and struggling. You have no idea because your perception of hawaii has been generated my msm. I stand by my words, the gods help us! I worked my way up the shit ladder here in hawaii for 25 years from the very bottom, but I’ve proved my salt and don’t kowtow to anyone – esp locals – I get in dustups all the time… and don’t take shit from no one. When cornered, I’m one mean, nasty, sob. I’ll go toe to toe with any asshole. And that’s a fact.

  20. No, cinderman…. not talking about a beach front condo… talking about a huge huge boat being built … like an island that has large expensive condos and pools and theaters and mountain climbing and everything a person needs to live their lives way out on the sea……
These boats were contracted to be built in S. Korea ….
not by Americans who need jobs….. I think it is on CNN money….
Yeah, I know… you heat your water off the lava flow….
just kidding….. BTW, I’m not looking for a fight… so keep your toes in your shoes….. 🙂

  21. Well we found out what happened to the 12th person. Shot in the head 4 times. Don’t it make you proud? Our tax money paid for the weapon and ammo used!

  22. Jan… sorry, but I live in a body of constant pain. I have a tendency to be short with people… and regret it later. Btw, I heat my water with a bosch demand tankless. I drive a car that gets 40 mpg, and grow as much food as I can. There’s also much about me that I can’t say here. I’m a survivor. I even eat road kill 🙂

Whats the lattest word on the statas of Joe Meadors?
    Has his safety been confirmed?

  24. *****************************************************

  25. yes, sorry B, Joe is alive and well and returned home to his wife I believe

  26. though he was shot by two paintball guns

  27. Rabbi Weiss at least gives me some hope for the hardline jewish “settlers” who are reclaiming land given to them by some fucking god that they don’t know wtf they are talking about and also have little interest in real history and anthropology. As I’ve stated before, there’s not one stitch of archeological evidence that the “great migration” ever took place. Fuck the zionists! They all suffer from sub cranial rectal insertion – their heads are up their asses so far they can’t see straight.

  28. OK thanks. I haden’t read that info anywhere.and was wondering. I hope he submits some sort of narritive of his lattest experiences that is made public.
